ADR-004: Django Channels & WebSocket Realtime Inbox

  • Status: Accepted
  • Date: 2026-07-15
  • Deciders: Frontend & Backend Engineering Teams

Context

Multi-agent customer support chat requires instant delivery of inbound WhatsApp messages and status changes without constant client HTTP polling.

Decision

We adopt Daphne ASGI Server and Django Channels 4.0 with Redis Channel Layer for bidirectional WebSocket communications over
/ws/inbox/<tenant_id>/
.

Consequences

  • Positive: Low latency (< 50ms broadcast delay), reduced database query load.
  • Negative: Requires ASGI web server deployment (Daphne).
